The feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron of Mexico. Catholic tradition says she appeared to Juan Diego, an Indigenous man, on the hill of Tepeyac in December 1531.

On the day: Millions of pilgrims travel to the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City in the days around 12 December, many of them on foot for days, and churches all over the country hold processions and dances.

Christmas with the presepe

Read moreShow less

An Italian Christmas centres on the presepe, the nativity scene. Tradition says Saint Francis of Assisi staged the first one, with live people and animals, in a cave at Greccio in 1223.

On the day: Families set up a presepe at home and churches compete with large ones. The nativity scenes of Naples are famous for filling Bethlehem with the everyday life of 18th-century Naples: shopkeepers, cheeses, bread and farm animals.
