Italy's national day remembers the referendum of 2 June 1946, when Italians voted to end the monarchy and become a republic.
On the day: In Rome a wreath is laid at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier on the Altare della Patria, and a military parade marches along Via dei Fori Imperiali. The Frecce Tricolori aerobatic jets fly over the city trailing green, white and red smoke.
